Every year an estimated one million students participate in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) tests. The tests are taken by students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9*. NAPLAN is the largest educational testing program in Australia.
NAPLAN is used to test student abilities in three areas of literacy—reading, writing and language conventions—and in numeracy. Results from across Australia are then used to identify weak points among current Australian students’ knowledge and ability.
*All students in these year levels are expected to participate in the tests.
Historically, NAPLAN tests were conducted on paper. However, from 2022 onwards the tests have been conducted online. This means students complete the NAPLAN tests on a computer or tablet.
Students no longer take exactly the same test. Instead, the Reading, Numeracy and Conventions of Language tests will automatically adapt and tailor to the students' level as they progress through the test.
